MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Thousands of longshoremen are on strike across the nation and that includes hundreds in Mobile.

A picket line has started near the Alabama state docks. This picket line started at midnight on Tuesday as the contract between the ILA and US Maritime Alliance expired.

Longshoremen line up near the Alabama state docks for the protest.

They’re here in solidarity with the thousands of other longshoremen across the country who’ve stopped work waiting for a better contact, the ILA is asking for 77% higher wages to compensate for rising inflation, another big concern is how and when automation may replace jobs.

Locally, the strike’s threat would affect the APM-Terminal in Mobile and the cargo that flows in and out of it. Alabama Port Authority President John Driscoll hoped to minimize the impact of the strike.

This would mark the first strike for the ILA on both the East and Gulf Coasts since 1977.

We everything going on now is not the time for this. People in North Carolina have lost everything. What these people going on strike are doing will make it so much more expensive for everyone. They are a bunch of selfish people.
