FAIRHOPE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — A coffee battle is brewing in Fairhope as the feud between local and global chains is soaring to new heights, literally.

A banner plane flew above Fairhope on Tuesday morning and spread the message of a “David versus Goliath” kind of fight.

“We don’t see planes with banners around Fairhope pretty much ever,” Anne Dorman, a Fairhope resident, said. “It’s just unique and creative, and I love it; it’s genius.”

Starbucks has spread down the Eastern Shore this year, opening two new locations off Highway 98.

William Hanes owns Fairhope’s Provision and Provision on the Fly. He’s also the mastermind behind the banner plane. He said that supporting local companies is part of what gives the town its charm.

“I think when you’re locally owned, you just are more in touch with your town and the owners live here,” Hanes said. “We’re pouring 100% of our dollars back into the community.”

Hanes said he is fortunate and appreciative that Fairhope is a town that unconditionally supports locally owned businesses.

“You know, obviously we’re not going to be the coffee spot for 100% of the population, and that’s totally fine,” Hanes said.

Dorman said that one of her favorite qualities about Fairhope is the unique support from the community for small business owners.

“We’re growing so rapidly in Baldwin County, and it’s really the question of how do you do that,” Dorman said. “Everyone wants to maintain the integrity and character of Fairhope and keep it ‘Mom and Pop’ and support local and small businesses.”

However, she said as with anything in life, it’s important to find a balance.

“But luckily you can have Starbucks supported by those who are traveling through town or maybe early in the morning, headed to the hospital right across the street,” Dorman said.

Dorman said despite the Eastern Shore coffee wars, there are options for everyone.

“I mean, we are coffee connoisseurs here. We have several great spots and I think that those will always be here,” Dorman said. “I’m not sure what will happen in the future with Starbucks. I have no hate, but I have a lot of love for the ones that are right here.”
