BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. ( WKRG ) — It’s time to ‘Walk and Roll’ in Baldwin County as 10 different schools countywide participated in the annual event.

Kids across Baldwin County hit the streets bright and early to try a new way to get to school Wednesday morning.

Walk and Roll to School Day is for kids to exercise, enjoy fresh air and spend time with other students.

Parents, students and teachers opted out of riding to school and choosing to take a stroll or roll.

“It’s also a great conversation starter for kids to build relationships with them and talk about the good old days when we did walk to school every day,” Mathis Elementary School Principal Dr. Shannon McCurdy said.

More than 100 students at Mathis Elementary in Foley showed up to walk and roll. The students told News 5 they had a blast.

The day is about encouraging children to stay active and showing them that riding in a car or bus isn’t the only way to get to school.

“My favorite part was the weather. Walking with the kids, laughing with the kids, talking about our environment,” Dr. McCurdy said. “But also the teachers being involved and seeing the kids with the teachers, having conversations with them together on and off school campus.
