11 inmates charged with attempted escape from Avoyelles Parish Jail

MARKSVILLE, La. ( WNTZ ) — Eleven inmates at the Avoyelles Parish DC-1 Jail attempted an escape early Wednesday morning, forcing their way through a cell door past a corrections deputy in an apparent bid to flee the facility. According to the Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office (APSO), the inmates, confined in a lockdown cell, overpowered the door but were unable to exit the building.

The incident occurred around 8 a.m. on October 4, 2023. APSO officials say a quick response from deputies swiftly contained the situation, preventing any of the inmates from leaving the DC-1 Jail. All individuals involved were secured back into the lockdown cell without further incident.

After consulting with the Avoyelles Parish District Attorney’s Office, authorities have charged the inmates with simple escape, as they had “intentionally departed a designated area where they were legally confined.” The sheriff’s office confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.

Sheriff David Dauzat commended his staff for their swift action and teamwork, stating, “Their training, professionalism, and commitment to public safety paid off today.” He emphasized that no inmate was able to leave the jail facility, and no serious injuries were reported.

Under Louisiana law, all individuals involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
