PENSACOLA, Fla. ( WKRG ) — As communities in Hurricane Milton’s path prepare for landfall, Florida power companies began to prepare as well.

Florida Power and Light has roughly 14,000 restoration workers from across the country who will be on standby in potentially affected areas of Florida due to Hurricane Milton.

FPL began sending crews to nearly 50 Florida communities that are in a state of emergency, with a majority of crews focused on the Tampa area.

Officials with FPL said they do not want restoration workers traveling through intense conditions as Milton makes landfall, opting to have employees already stationed in certain communities to restore potential large amounts of lost power.

Sarah Gatewood, a spokesperson with Florida Power and Light, said because crews will travel to Florida from many parts of the country, FPL will have more than 20 staging sights, ranging from Jacksonville to Miami.

“They’re set up to prepare the crews for their day, making sure they have the equipment and the resources they need, that they have food. If they need laundry done, we can get their laundry done, all of the things so they can just focus on the work they need to do to get the power back on,” said Gatewood.
