MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Girls flag football is in it’s first season as an officially sanctioned sport by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. With more than 100 teams across the state, one of the best programs resides on the gulf coast.

The Alma Bryant (7-0) girls clinched the 6/7A Region 1 championship Tuesday night with a dominating 44-0 win over Baker. It’s the Hurricanes fourth shutout this season as they’ve outscored opponents 278-25.

After winning the area title last season, but falling short of a championship playoff run — Canes head coach Zack Wards says the girl are on a mission.

“We got started in the summer and have been getting after it ever since. I couldn’t ask for a better group of girls. From the very beginning we returned 14 or so girls and they knew what the expectations were,” said Ward.

The team is led by junior twin sisters Mari-Margret (QB) and Madi-Mari Grayson (WR). In Tuesdays game against Baker, Mari-Margret threw four touchdowns and 205 yards on 16/20 passing, she also recorded a pick-six. Madi-Mari posted 8 catches for 134 yards and a score.

“Coming in, we saw we had the talent. I’ve got four receivers who can catch the ball no matter what if I throw it up. A running back in the backfield who has my back and a center who is catching and blocking for me,” said Mari-Margret. “We’ve still got to get better in practice though. We’re very talented, but we got to get better everyday.”

Alma Bryant will close out region play against Theodore — the Canes will host their first round playoff game in a few weeks.
