ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. ( WKRG ) — As communities brace for the impacts of Hurricane Milton, people are getting themselves and their animals to safety.

The Escambia County Equestrian Center is accepting equine and small livestock evacuees from Hurricane Milton.

The county tells us the center is currently hosting three groups of evacuees, with seven horses and a donkey.

Those with Florida Equine Disaster Response are ensuring the evacuees and their animals get the support they need.

They’re checking in with people and ready to supply them with horse feed, hay, nonperishables, and hygiene products.

Jasmine Vargas with the Florida Equine Disaster Response Team says this outpouring of support is a product of the horse community coming together.

“Our equine community goes far and wide across the southeast. So we have worked so hard to get resources, places for evacuees to go all over, people that are opening up their homes, their personal barns to bring people in, because the horse community is so great and just one big family,” Vargas said.

This support comes as the Florida Equine Disaster Response Team works to provide aid to those impacted by Hurricane Helene.

The equestrian center accepts evacuees on a first-come-first-serve basis.
