BAY MINETTE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — During the last week of September, a few officers at the Bay Minette Police Department decided they wanted to do something to give back to those impacted by Helene in North Carolina.

BMPD Sergeant Jeff Warner said that as a kid he visited North Carolina so the state has a special place in his heart. As a result, the department decided to host a donation drive to help those impacted by the storm.

Officers teamed up with Bay Minette City Hall, local schools, and other organizations to get the word out about the drive.

Fast forward to Oct. 11, two 16-foot trailers were filled with items plus an additional 26-foot U-Haul truck. The community gathered over 1000 items and the department said they are still expecting more.

Sergeant Warner told WKRG that the U-Haul truck was donated along with the other items. The city also rallied together to give monetary donations as well.

“We have a community that stands behind us,” said Sergeant Weaver.

Officers plan to leave Saturday morning arriving between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Sergeant Warner said the team at BMPD is grateful for the response of the community and they are considering making another trip sometime in the future.
