MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Downtown Mobile residents and visitors may soon be able to enjoy the water in a new way as Mayor Sandy Stimpson proposes selling city property.

According to a city news release, Stimpson proposed the sale to support a mixed-use development in downtown Mobile that would connect people to the waterfront.

The proposal comes after Burton Property Group and Kessler Capital announced plans to develop an entertainment and hospitality space on the waterfront. The space, called River Walk Plaza, will be built near the convention center at 10 Water Street.

    LOCATION:

Agreement on the proposal is needed for the development, the release said.

“The purchase-sale agreement is an important next step to bringing the River Walk Plaza development to fruition,” Stimpson said. “This project is poised to be a transformational public-private partnership that will fully activate our downtown waterfront.

“A mixed-use development with lodging, entertainment, and recreational options on the banks of the Mobile River will perfectly complement the other ongoing projects in the area,” he continued. “When this vision is realized, the waterfront will be a fully connected and thriving piece of downtown Mobile.”

The Mobile City Council will vote on the proposal at the Oct. 22 meeting.
