FAIRHOPE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — A section of the Fairhope Municipal Pier is closed for repairs as of Wednesday morning as a part of the city’s Working Waterfront Project.

The portion of the pier will be closed while contractors work to add new handrails to replace the old wooden ones weathered by the elements.

The new railing will be made of a composite material that will be much more resilient. The new material could last for more than 50 years before it tarnishes, News 5 has learned.

However, the new handrails are just a small part of the new upgrades coming to the Municipal Park. When the project is complete, people can expect to see a new restroom on the south end of the park, revamped and repaired seawalls, landscaping changes and more.

Fairhope’s Mayor Sherry Sullivan told News 5 these are necessary upgrades.

“It’s going to be beautiful when it’s done, so we do have a plan in place,” Sullivan said. “I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised when it’s done and really looking forward to next year and having this project complete.”

The city is completing each of the upgrades in phases, ensuring the public still has access to what some call “one of the most iconic spots in Fairhope.”

Sullivan said city officials are hoping to have all of the handrails replaced within three to four weeks. She said she feels the Working Waterfront Project is still on track and making good progress.

In the meantime, a majority of the pier is still open to go out and enjoy the views along the bay.
