MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Mobile District Attorney Keith Blackwood joined News 5’s Shamonee Baker and Bill Riales on the red couch to discuss how local organizations are helping domestic violence survivors.

One of those is the Domestic Violence Task Force, which Blackwood said includes the DA’s Office, law enforcement, and community organizations like Penelope House .

Knowing the resources available is important to break the cycle of violence, according to Blackwood.

“Many times, a victim of domestic violence is in a situation where he or she feels like there’s just no other choice than to remain in this situation,” he said. “We want people to know that there are resources, especially for women, out there like Penelope House — there is an alternative, and they can get their children and get out of that violent situation.”

It’s a time to “come together to mourn the lives lost to domestic violence, celebrate the progress that has been made to end this epidemic, and connect with others working to create change, the Office of Family Violence Prevention And Services states.

For more information on resources, watch the full interview in the video player above.

he needs to be trying to get tougher penalties for every crime there's no deterrent that's why people keep doing it if there were stricter penalties in place people might think before they commit a crime and quit plea bargaining the justice system in Alabama is too soft on criminals

It really grind my gears when People in Power get on here and act like they are doing EVERYTHING they CAN do to help victims of domestic violence. There’s not any resources in Mobile to help with this epidemic. Yes the Penelope house is available. But is it tailored to the majority of people who are in need? No. It’s like a jail for victims. They want to lock the victim away and leave the person who is doing the crime free. which leaves other innocent people to become victims of the same person. The Penelope House do not offer any programs that would help families get into immediate housing, and resources. This program is outdated and it needs to be adjusted. There is too many funds coming into the city to still have the same outcome for victims. The program that you guys have in place for victims is a slippery slope. No one should have to wait 2years for court after a protection order has been violated due to strangulation. Do something to help victims or don’t speak on it at all.
