A news release from the school district said this is the first time the band has participated in a major national bowl game since 1989.

“This standard of excellence was set here long ago, and we’re committed to continuing that legacy. It means everything to give these students the opportunity to perform on such a large stage,” Band Director Derek Fields said. “It’s an honor to continue this tradition and ensure our students experience something truly unforgettable.”

The game is set for Dec. 28 at 5:45 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Viking Band will perform the Star-Spangled Banner before the game and participate in a concert festival with their symphonic band.

“We are incredibly excited and honored for the Fort Walton Beach Viking Band to perform at the Military Bowl in December,” Fort Walton Beach High School Principal Lindsey Smith said. “Coming from a proud military community, this opportunity means so much to our students, our school, and the entire community. It’s a privilege to represent Fort Walton Beach on a national stage and showcase our talented band while celebrating our deep connection to the military.”

The trip will cost around $130,000, and the band is raising funds through community initiatives.
