DICKSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man previously convicted of killing a Dickson County sergeant will pursue an appeal.

Steven Wiggins and his legal team filed a motion for a new trial in Judge David Wolfe’s Dickson County court on Tuesday. Wolfe noted that previously, Wiggins indicated that he did not wish to pursue an appeal, but Wiggins affirmed that he changed his mind.

The state has until December to file a response to Wiggins’ motion. The motion for new trial will be argued on February 4, 2025.

Wiggins was convicted in the killing of Dickson County Sergeant Daniel Baker, which occurred on May 30, 2018. Wiggins faced charges of carjacking and firearms violations that resulted in death on a federal level. He pleaded guilty to those charges March 25, 2022. That sentence was carried out Tuesday, April 26.

“Steven Wiggins brutally murdered Dickson County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Daniel Baker because he didn’t want to go back to jail,” U.S. Attorney Mark Wildasin said at the time.

In August 2021, Wiggins was sentenced to death by the state of Tennessee. Meanwhile, Erika Castro Miles also faced charges in Baker’s death. Miles ultimately reached a plea agreement.

“Those crimes that day were against Sgt. Daniel Baker, a decorated Marine combat veteran,” Wildasin added at the time. “But, they were also crimes against his wife Lisa, his young daughter Meredith, his parents, brother, extended family and friends in community.”
