NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A few of the state’s nonprofits recently had an unexpected payday courtesy of the Tennessee Department of Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division.

On Monday, the department announced it would return more than $20,000 in missing money to Tennessee nonprofits.

The following organizations received funds from the state:

    • Mercy Ministries of America: $546
    • Operation Stand Down: $788
    • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital: $17,212
    • Tennessee Kidney Foundation: $1,686

“It’s especially meaningful to see these funds returned to the organizations that make such a significant impact on our communities,” said Tennessee Treasurer David H. Lillard, Jr. “We are proud to support their important work through the Unclaimed Property Division’s efforts.”

The state’s Unclaimed Property Division is part of a consumer protection program that works to return cash to its rightful owner.

According to the Tennessee Treasury, unclaimed property is intangible or tangible property, in which there has been no activity generated or contact with the owner for one year or longer – at which point it becomes unclaimed. It remains with the state until it’s claimed by a proprietor.

During the 2023 fiscal year, the state’s 2023 Unclaimed Property Annual Report showed more than $68 million was returned to claimants.
