GALLATIN, Tenn. (WKRN) — Numerous people attended Saturday’s funeral service for a Gallatin sports icon and community giant, Pat Webb.

Webb, who was part of Gallatin’s inaugural “Hall of Fame” class, died on Sunday, Aug. 25 at the age of 92 after a battle with cancer.

Hundreds of people stopped by First Baptist Church in Gallatin during the visitation on Saturday, Aug. 31 to pay their respects to Webb, who worked in Sumner County schools for 32 years.

“He was just a man of humility. He didn’t brag about his many giftings,” said Pastor Travis Fleming, who led Webb’s service.

A Korean War veteran who dedicated his life to Sumner County in countless ways, Webb is widely remembered as a long-time basketball and football coach in Gallatin.

“He had a phenomenal record with the girls basketball team,” said Allan Cook, whose wife played basketball under Webb, as did he. “And he had a phenomenal record no matter what he did.”

Coaching both boys and girls, middle schoolers and high schoolers, Webb left his mark on generations of Sumner County athletes. He had a special skill set so few coaches possess.

“He was the type of person that could get a lot out of anybody because he just had that persona about him that would make you want to put out all you can,” said Cook. “He was such a smart man as far as communicating with people and just making you feel at ease.”

“[He was] phenomenal in every respect, just in the way he treated people,” Cook added. “He was just always good to all of us kids.”

A family man, a Gallatin sports icon, and a devoted community member, Webb can be summed up in just one word.

“He was a legend, in so many aspects,” said Fleming. “If we could multiply the number of Coach Pat Webbs and place them in Sumner County, we would be blessed.”

Webb and his wife, Ruby, were married for 69 years. He left behind his three children, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
