WILSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Wilson County motorists experienced delays along Highway 109 Friday afternoon due to what authorities described as a “double fatality wreck.”

The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office announced shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6 that all northbound lanes were shut down around the 5700 block of Highway 109 for an extended period of time because of a wreck with injuries.

However, just before 1:45 p.m., the sheriff’s office updated its post, saying two people had died in the crash. One northbound lane and one southbound lane were reportedly open near the scene.

At 2:19 p.m., the Lebanon Police Department wrote on social media platform X that traffic was backing up in both directions along Highway 109 due to the deadly crash.

“Expect extended delays and seek alternate routes on your commute home,” police said.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) identified the two people who died in the wreck as 78-year-old Fredrick Miler and 76-year-old Edna Miler, who were the respective driver and passenger of a 2005 Ford Ranger. Both were wearing seatbelts during the incident.

According to officials, a 48-year-old driver was heading northbound in a 2018 Nissan Titan on Highway 109. The 51-year-old driver of a 2024 Lexus RX3 was reportedly stopped in the highway’s center lane, preparing to turn left onto Northern Road, while the Ford was traveling south on Highway 109.

Authorities said the Nissan passed traffic in the turning lane at a high rate of speed, rear-ended the Lexus, drove into the southbound lanes, and hit the Ford head-on.

THP reported the Nissan and the Ford came to a stop in the southbound lanes of Highway 109. The Lexus stopped in one of the northbound lanes of the highway.

Both the driver of the Nissan, who was not wearing a seatbelt, and the driver of the Lexus, who was wearing a seatbelt, were injured in the collision, officials said. However, there is no word on the nature of their injuries.

Charges against the Nissan driver are pending as the investigation develops, according to the preliminary crash report.
