NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Two men are facing 10 years in federal prison in connection to a shooting that critically injured an innocent passerby three years ago.

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Tennessee Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that Corey Monte Pickett, 35, and Elbert Bryant Gleaves, 29, were found guilty of being in possession of ammunition as felons.

The shooting took place in March 2021 at Camel Carwash near Doverside Drive and Dickerson Pike. Pickett was reportedly at the business with two other men when Gleaves arrived.

News 2’s original report stated Gleaves arrived at the car wash, scanned a membership pass and passed through the mechanical arm guard to enter the car wash tunnel.

According to an arrest report, Gleaves was seen on security footage getting out of his vehicle just before the tunnel’s entrance with a ski mask on.

That’s when he fired at least nine rounds toward Pickett and the other men, according to the DOJ. After shooting at the men, he got back in his car and reversed, breaking the car wash’s mechanical arm. Gleaves then sped away from the scene.

Meanwhile, Pickett and another man chased Gleaves through the parking lot while shooting at his car.

Amidst all of the gunfire, a person in the passenger seat of a vehicle at a traffic light nearby was hit by a bullet. Officials said the victim was critically injured after being shot in the upper left arm.

“These defendants’ reckless disregard for human life resulted in the serious injury of an innocent bystander and placed many others at risk,” said United States Attorney Henry C. Leventis. “As a result of the excellent work of our law enforcement partners and our trial team, they can now be held accountable.”

One of the other men involved in the case, Dezzion Pickett, also pled guilty to drug charges and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is expected to be sentenced on Sept. 19 and faces up to seven years in federal prison.

Prison isn't hard enough. That's why many continue to return. Hard labor needs to be part of the punishment and if they don't work then they don't eat.
