NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Months after a man was stabbed in what appeared to be a random act of violence, Metro Nashville police said they have identified a suspect — and he’s already behind bars for another incident.

A Crime Stoppers tip and further investigation by Hermitage Precinct detectives reportedly led to the identification of 21-year-old Roddrick Greene as the suspect in the June stabbing .

The 29-year-old victim was pumping gas at a station on Smith Springs Road when police said Greene approached him from behind and stabbed him in the head and neck. The man was able to fight off his alleged attacker and run inside the gas station, but by the time officers arrived, Greene had disappeared into the woods.

The victim suffered “serious,” but “non-life-threatening” injuries, police reported. When interviewed, he told investigators the suspect hadn’t said anything to him before the attack and didn’t take anything from him.

Surveillance footage showed Greene coming out of the woods as the victim pulled into the parking lot. Greene reportedly lingered by the front of the gas station for a few seconds before walking toward the man, but authorities said there was “no apparent reason” for the stabbing.

After issuing a warrant charging Greene with attempted criminal homicide, police said they learned Greene was already in jail for a separate incident. According to officials, Greene has been jailed since Aug. 25 for assaulting a first responder, public intoxication and resisting arrest.

Arrest records show officers encountered Greene that day after receiving reports of a man walking nude and wrapped in a piece of carpeting in the area of Old Hickory Boulevard and Andrew Jackson Parkway.

An officer at TriStar Summit Medical Center told police Greene had left the hospital after assaulting nurses and staff. While trying to arrest Greene, he allegedly resisted and punched one of the officers twice, leaving the officer in need of stitches.
