Wilson County law enforcement on the scene told News 2 that a family rented a pontoon boat when a man entered the water and never came back up. Authorities added that the rest of the family is safe.

Recovery efforts are underway. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has taken the lead in the recovery process along with Wilson County authorities. Hendersonville authorities joined the effort later on Friday afternoon. The TWRA later said that the Army Corps of Engineers also assisted with the recovery.

Just after 5:30 p.m., a spokesperson for Hendersonville Fire said that the body was officially recovered from the lake.

The TWRA later identified the victim as a 49-year-old man from Petersburg, Virginia. They did not release his name. The agency said that the man was not wearing a life jacket when he jumped from the pontoon to go for a swim.

This incident is the 18th boating fatality on Tennessee waters for 2024, according to the TWRA.
