KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Vols brought home a shutout victory against Kent State Saturday night and broke several records Saturday night.

Dylan Sampson 22-yard run started off what would be a monstrous night for Tennessee. Sampson ended with a hat trick by the end of the first quarter, adding two 1-yard touchdowns into the Vols program record-setting (modern era) 37 points by the end of the first.

Sampson had a final act for the contest, adding on a 14-yard touchdown towards the middle of the second quarter. Along with his four touchdowns, it was Sampson’s fourth game with 100 rushing yards or more.

The junior wasn’t the only running back helping the Vols run away from the Golden Flashes. The hometown guy, DeSean Bishop racked up 120 rushing yards including 53-yard and 47-yard touchdown runs.

A touchdown pass to Chris Brazzell from Nico Iamaleava and two from Gaston Moore to Miles KItselman and Mike Matthews respectfully played into the Vols record-setting 65 points by the break.

Among that was a safety, a credit to the Vols unstoppable defense. That same defense continued their streak of keeping opponents out of the end zone, the streak now stands at 16 quarters.

Scoring slowed in the second half, Max Gilbert launched a 36-yard and 21-yard field goal in each of the remaining quarters. The latter with 14:05 left in the game, set a new record for most total points scored in a game for Tennessee at 71, the previous record held was 70.

That was the end of the scoring but not the end of the records being broken, the Vols finished with 740 yards of total offense, a new high for Tennessee.

NEXT UP: The Vols head to Head Coach Josh Heupel’s alma matter for what will be the Sooners’ SEC debut. That airs on next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern on WATE.
