TROUSDALE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A 16-year-old has been charged after illegally possessing firearms, prompting a brief lockdown at Trousdale County High School on Monday.

The Trousdale County Sheriff’s Department posted to Facebook that they had received information from the teen’s guardian indicating that the teen had left home without permission and that a handgun and shotgun were missing from the home.

After being notified at roughly 11:10 a.m., the Sheriff’s Department said that they notified school administrators and went to the high school. They also notified the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security.

An investigation revealed that the teen had been in possession of the firearms days earlier; the shotgun was used on a hunting trip and the handgun had been transferred to an adult. Both guns were found outside of Trousdale County and seized by Trousdale County deputies.

“No information was found alleging the firearms had been at the school,” the Sheriff’s Department said in the post.

The teen was charged with unruly and unlawful possession of a handgun and a hearing has been scheduled in Trousdale County Juvenile Court.

“The Sheriff’s Office, School Administrators and Homeland Security remain committed to ensuring the safety of students in Trousdale County Schools,” the post added. “We appreciate everyone’s concern and assistance. However, we ask everyone to not report, post or share false information. False information interferes in finding the truth and could be a criminal offense.”
