    2 deadly crashes on I-40 in Smith County under investigation

    SMITH COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Investigators in Smith County responded to two deadly crashes on Interstate 40 that occurred moments apart, two miles away from each other Tuesday night.

    Just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, a single-vehicle crash was reported near mile marker 263. A car reportedly went over the side of a bridge and landed upside down in the Caney Fork River.

    Two people were killed in the crash and two were critically injured, according to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office.

    The Smith County Rescue Squad later announced a second crash occurred just two miles back from the bridge in the westbound lanes of I-40 due to the stopped traffic.

    Officials said a vehicle became stuck underneath a semi-truck. One person was killed and two others were critically injured.

    Multiple agencies responded to the scene. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the investigations.
