NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man was fatally shot following a police chase after he reportedly carjacked a rideshare driver at gunpoint in downtown Nashville.
Just after 9 p.m. Friday, authorities said they were dispatched to 8th Avenue and Broadway, where a rideshare passenger reported that a man stole his Uber driver’s vehicle.
Adam Rodriguez, 26, and a woman, who is believed to be his girlfriend, were driving a white Kia Soul when they reportedly rear-ended the Uber driver’s Honda Odyssey.
Rodriguez allegedly approached the Honda with a gun and ordered the rideshare driver and passenger out of the vehicle. He and his girlfriend then got in the van and drove away, officials said.
A bullet hole seen in the windshield of the Kia is believed to have been fired from inside the vehicle just before the crash, according to authorities. The exact time and location where the shot was fired remain under investigation.
A short time later, officers said they located the van driving in North Nashville and deployed a spike strip, flattening at least one of the tires. Rodriguez reportedly continued to drive down 10th Avenue North before exiting the van and fleeing on foot.
Body camera footage shows Officer Pierce Moore getting out of his patrol vehicle and chasing Rodriguez to the back porch of a house on 10th Avenue. Rodriguez was repeatedly ordered to drop the pistol in his hand by Moore, but Rodriguez did not comply and the officer fired multiple shots, wounding Rodriguez.
Rodriguez received medical aid at the scene and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died, according to officials. No officers were injured.
Moore, who joined the department in May 2023, is on routine administrative assignment while the shooting is investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and MNPD.
“TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration,” the TBI said in a statement about the investigation. “The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s Involvement.”
