Metro Councilmember working with NDOT to combat traffic congestion in Green Hills

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Drivers passing through Nashville’s Green Hills expect traffic — and sometimes lots of it.

The traffic has been so bad that some drivers use side streets to avoid it. However, a Metro Councilmember for the area said it’s turned into a safety issue.

Councilmember Jeff Preptit said the longest he has had to wait in traffic to drive through Hillsboro Pike was upward of 45 minutes.

“Traffic congestion has just been getting worse and worse,” Preptit told News 2. “That is one of the things I am hyper-aware of.”

Pretit told News 2 that traffic lights, like the ones at the intersection of Glen Echo Road and Crestmoor Road, have caused significant backups in traffic. According to Preptit, Nashville’s Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) has worked reconfigure the stop lights for smoother traffic.

In the meantime, traffic has been pushed to the two-lane neighborhood roads, where there are often no sidewalks.

“People trying to skirt around the traffic and speeding through the neighborhoods, which causes a significant safety issue,” Preptit said.

Preptit said that he is working with NDOT to get more sidewalks and implement a traffic calming system.

“For folks who, really, are just trying to come home and take their kids and their dogs for a walk after a long day of work,” Preptit explained.

The traffic light on Glen Echo Road and Crestmoor Road is anticipated to be completed by early next year. Preptit also encouraged residents in the area to request any needs or wants for the area through Hub Nashville.
