NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — We have learned that forecasting the chance to see the Northern Lights as far south as Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky is a little like weather forecasting — not a perfect science.

But the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center issued a “Geomagnetic Storm Watch” for Thursday night with a level G 4 (of 5) geomagnetic storm forecast through 1 a.m. Friday.

Unfortunately, they do not forecast them to be seen as far south as our area. The red line on the map below is the farthest they expect them to be seen.

However, last Monday, we had a G 3 Geomagnetic Storm and we received these pictures from Tim Ferris in Hendersonville and James Pettus in West Nashville.

It should be noted that Tim Ferris told us that he used a long exposure on his cell phone that enhanced the light.

During the viewing of the Northern Lights last May , the pictures taken on most cell phones showed the lights better than the naked eye, even without special exposure.

So, it will be worth it to go to a dark place and get a clear view so you can look low on the horizon.

If we get lucky enough to see the Northern Lights again, send your pictures to pix@wkrn.com .
