17-year-old charged for making threat against Nashville school

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A 17-year-old student of High Road School of Nashville has been charged in juvenile court for making a threat of mass violence against the school, the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) announced.

According to police, the student sent messages threatening to “shoot up the school.”

All threats against schools, special events and businesses are taken very seriously by the MNPD, they said. Those responsible will be prosecuted once they are identified, MNPD added.

This arrest is the latest in a string of school threats being investigated by state and local officials in recent months. Students as young as 13 have been arrested, including two eighth-graders last month .

School threats have become a topic of greater concern over the last few years. The Tennessee General Assembly took its own action, increasing the penalties for making threats against schools or on school property to a Class E felony.

Class E felonies can lead to, on average, a seven month jail sentence.
