NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Part of the sell before the approval on construction for the new Nissan Stadium was the possibility of an NFL Super Bowl coming to Nashville.

The NFL announced that Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host the 2028 Super Bowl. The new Nissan Stadium has been projected to open in 2027, which means that Nashville could be next in line.

“We’re excited about the change to bring a Super Bowl and also some other big-scale events,” Metropolitan Sports Authority’s executive director, Monica Fawknotson, said.

During Thursday morning’s Metropolitan Sports Authority meeting, the stadium construction team updated the Board of Directors on progress. At the meeting, the team said that the stadium has started to take shape as concrete continues being poured on the property. Plumbing work is also underway at the site; several board members commended the work that has been done.

In May, NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell said he thought the Super Bowl could be very successful in Nashville. He also mentioned the success of the 2016 NFL Draft in Nashville.

“We think construction is going well. There’s a lot of work. If you’ve been by recently, you’ve seen how much has come up out of the ground,” Fawknotson added. “That’s exciting — to move into that phase of construction.”
