Tennessee early voting surpasses 2016 numbers, falls just shy of 2020 turnout after 9th day

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Voter turnout has surpassed 30% in Tennessee with just a few more days left for early voting.

As of Friday, Oct. 25, the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office said 1,450,625 voters had cast their ballots in the Volunteer State. This surpasses 2016 numbers by 31% after the ninth day of early voting, but it’s still almost 7% lower than the turnout for the 2020 election.

Michael Chaun, who is voting in his second election, told News 2 he is passionate about getting younger voters to the polls.

“When you’re not involved, it’s kind of hard to talk about the future and what you want if you’re not involved in a very serious thing like voting,” he said after casting his vote at the Green Hills Library.

Williamson County and Loudon County are the only two counties to surpass 40% voter turnout so far, officials said. Meanwhile, Davidson County turnout is about 20% lower than it was in 2020, with just under 26%.

“That’s not entirely surprising to me, but I think having ways to make voting easier early is hopefully going to increase that,” said Chloe Caylor, an early voter at the Metro Office Building in downtown Nashville.

Shelby County has seen the biggest decrease so far in early voting compared to 2020, with about 32% less early voters in 2024.

Early voting in Tennessee continues through Thursday, Oct. 31, but if you don’t vote by then, you can vote in person on Election Day, which is Tuesday, Nov. 5. For more information about voting in the Volunteer State, follow this link .
