EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The Medal of Honor monument in front of Hannah Community Center was originally dedicated on Veterans Day in 2013. Wednesday, the community gathered there for a wreath-laying ceremony just ahead of Memorial Day.

Deborah Stuart came in memory of her father who enlisted for World War II at age 17.

“We owe many of our freedoms today to Dad and his generation and I wanted to honor that,” she said.

Dozens of people showed up to watch the laying of the wreaths, including former mayor of East Lansing Victor Loomis. Loomis is also a Vietnam-era non-combat army veteran.

“I really applaud the city of East Lansing for organizing this event,” Loomis said. “To see so many of the city staff show up and support, [it’s] very meaningful.”

Scott House, deputy commanding general in the Lansing National Guard, spoke about the importance of remembering those who have served.

House says Memorial Day is about more than barbecues and a long weekend. To him, it’s about reflecting and honoring the sacrifices of the fallen and remembering that freedom is not free.

House also spoke about supporting veterans who need assistance after serving.

“The war never stops really,” House continued. “We always remember those who have fallen, those who are buried, but we have to remember those that came home and the help that they will need.”
