LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)–East Lansing was hit hard with heavy rainfall this summer. In July, the city received up to 7 inches of rain, causing serious flooding.

The Department of Public Works held a public hearing at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center yesterday evening.

Staff members listened to better understand how the stormwater system handled the rain and what improvements could be made.

“It’s always shocking to hear these stories no matter how many times you hear them throughout the day because we understand as neighbors, as workers in this town, how impactful that can be. It’s definitely helpful for us though as we identify what can do about it as a community, “said Cliff Walls, environmental sustainability & resiliency manager.

Heavy rain left several roads and parking lots flooded, including The Quarters Apartments in East Lansing where about 20 cars were submerged in water a handful of times.

“It was stressful like really stressful. Just making sure you know we have important stuff.”
