MASON, Mich. (WLNS) — The 6 remaining councilmembers of the Mason City Council will hold a special meeting Monday to establish the process to select an interim councilmember.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Mason City Council Chambers, inside the Mason City Hall at 201 W. Ash St. in Mason. Officials will determine a timeline for the selection of a councilmember to serve through the end of the year.

The appointment will fill the seat vacated Wednesday by Councilwoman Rita Vogel. She resigned because Council declined to extended an approval to her absences resulting from her work caring for her ailing mother and preparing her mother for a move from Hawaii to Michigan. Without that approval, Vogel could have faced removal proceedings under the City Charter.

In addition to setting a timeline for the appointment process, Council will also establish whether or not there will be public interviews with candidates for the appointment, how many of the candidates will be publicly interviewed and the process by which Council will whittle the applicant pool.
