Kabul Airport Bombing Remembrance Ceremony honors fallen veterans

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — On the third anniversary of the tragedy, the Lansing Veteran’s Council held a ceremony in honor of the at least 183 people who were killed during a suicide bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The ceremony, a bilingual ceremony in Farsi and English, was held at Evergreen Cemetery at Colubarium Space.

The bombing took place at the Hamid Karzai International Airport on Aug. 26, 2021, killing at least 170 Afghan civilians and 13 members of the United States Military. The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISISK) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Eleven United States Marines, 1 Fleet Marine Force Navy Corpsman, and a United States Army Soldier died in the attack:

• Marine Corps Sgt. Nicole L. Gee;
• Marine Corps Cpl. Hunter Lopez;
• Marine Corps Cpl. Daegan W. Page;
• Marine Corps Cpl. Humberto A. Sanchez;
• Marine Corps Lance Cpl. David L. Espinoza;
• Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jared M. Schmitz;
• Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Rylee J. McCollum;
• Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola;
• Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui;
• Navy Petty Officer Third Class Maxton W. Soviak; and
• Army Staff Sgt. Ryan C. Knauss.
