MASON, Mich. (WLNS) — The Mason City Council approved an application, timeline and process to select a citizen to serve on the council until the end of December.

Applications will be available Tuesday on the city’s website , and interested citizens will have to complete the application and submit it by Sept. 5.

A special meeting of the 7-member council will be held on Sept. 9 to review the applications and determine how many will be invited for interviews.

Selected candidates will be interviewed at the Mason City Council’s regular meeting on Sept. 16. The body plans to select the interim councilmember that night and swear the person into office during the meeting.

The vacancy resulted from former City Councilwoman Rita Vogel’s resignation from City Council last week. Rather than face removal by the City Council for exceeding the allowable number of absences, she resigned.

However, Vogel will appear on the Nov. 5 general election ballot and says she will continue to run for and campaign for the position.

Current Councilmembers Leon Clark and Elaine Ferris, as well as Mayor Russell Whipple are also standing for re-election. Other candidates include Daniel Giganti, Thomas Husby and Shawn Sodman.
