LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– 23 years ago today, thousands of people were killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

In mid-Michigan, communities are holding events and memorials today to honor 9/11 victims and their families.

Flags are lowered around the Lansing area to honor each person from our state who died that day. Lansing mayor Andy Schor, acting labor secretary Julie Su, and the chiefs of the Lansing Fire and police departments attended a ceremony together this morning.

“Today, we honor the memory of those we lost on September 11, 2001, the first responders who ran toward danger without hesitation, and the families who have carried the weight of loss every day since. We have the honor of living in the greatest country in the world. Patriot Day is a reminder that in our darkest moments, we find strength in each other, and we must always stand together to protect our nation #NeverForget ,” Governor Gretchen Whitmer said on the social media platform ‘X’, formally known as Twitter.

“On September 11th, 2001, our nation experienced one of our darkest moments. As we remember this tragic anniversary and think of the families whose loved ones never came home, we must continue to stand together to solve the tough challenges of tomorrow and defend our freedoms for future generations,” said Senator Gary Peters in a news release.
