LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Newly released FBI statistics show a national drop in violent crime, but does that also hold true for Lansing?

The FBI released its 2023 Crime in the Nation statistics Monday, which break down more than 14 million criminal offenses from 2023. These offenses were reported to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program by over 16,000 law enforcement agencies.

Not every agency in the country reported, but the FBI says that these statistics show that violent crime dropped nationally from 2022–2023. However, it turns out those national averages aren’t always consistent locally.

The Lansing Police Department saw a 9 percent rise in violent crime from 2022–2023, as incidents rose by over 140 cases. There was also a more than 10 percent rise in aggravated assaults over that time, which rose by over 120, and homicides rose slightly from 17 to 18.

The East Lansing Police Department saw a 28 percent decrease in violent crime in 2023 compared to 2022, as cases dropped by over 40. They also saw an 18 percent decrease in aggravated assaults. The F.B.I. report did not provide homicide data from 2022 for the East Lansing Police Department, but in 2023 they reported 5 homicides.

The Jackson Police Department reported just over a 4 percent decrease in violent crime, which fell from 350 to 334 over that time.

They also saw about a 2 percent decrease in aggravated assaults, which fell slightly from 261 to 255. Homicides rose very slightly from 4 to 5 between 2022-2023.
