EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) Hockey season is quickly approaching in East Lansing and there is an extra buzz surrounding Michigan State’s hockey program.

As Adam Nightingale enters his third season as head coach, the Spartans will be ranked No. 4 in the county then they begin things on Oct. 4 at Lake Superior State.

The high ranking has to do with MSU returning 17 letter-winners from last year’s team who won the Big Ten regular season championship and the Big Ten tournament championship.

Among the returning players is senior forward and Detroit Red Wings draft pick Red Savage, who will be the team’s captain this season.

“I think one of the best qualities about being a leader is being genuine,” Nightingale said. “I really respect that about Red. He doesn’t change when I’m around.”

“It’s definitely an honor,” Savage said. “It’s definitely humbling as well to be able to have the coaching staff and the player behind you in that decision.”

Wisconsin transfer Charlie Stramel added, “When I played with him as a kid, he was actually the captain of the U-18s. So, he’s always been a big voice in the locker room, a very well-respected voice.”
