OKEMOS, Mich. (WLNS) – The Okemos girls golf team is the 6 Sports Team of the Week after the Wolves posted a program-record team score of 308 to win the CAAC Open.

Okemos was paced by senior standout Alena Li, who tied her personal best by shooting a 64 at the tournament.

“She just quietly goes about her business and she’s the hardest-working kid I think I’ve ever had,” head coach Dan Stolz said of Li. “I’ve had a bunch of them but she’s probably the hardest [working]. She’s here before I get here and she’s the last one to leave. She just demands a lot of herself but she has also, as she has gotten older, has just become more of a leader.”

Okemos’ team score was an impressive 27 strokes ahead of the team in second place.

“I know we’ve played well on this course before but we’ve never played that well,” said Li. “So it was pretty cool being able to set the school record.”

The girls CAAC Open was restarted five years ago and Okemos has won it every year.

Outside of Li, the Wolves lineup consists of two sophomores and two freshmen. Nonetheless, the Wolves are ranked as the No. 1 team in the state by the MIGCA.

“You have the possibility in a sport like this that if you are a tournament player, if you put some time in, there’s an opportunity to play as a ninth grader where you probably don’t in varsity football or basketball or some of those sports,” said Stolz. “But [the young players] have stepped in and they’ve done the work.”

Okemos has big goals for the upcoming postseason and will get the opportunity to host regionals this year at Forest Akers East.
