Political signs mowed over in Bath

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — With only a little more than a month left until Election Day, it’s peak political sign season—and some people’s signs in mid-Michigan are being vandalized.

6 News spoke with a man from Bath Township who says his mostly Democratic signs were destroyed, run over by a large lawnmower despite his grass already being cut.

“Well, I was pretty upset, obviously,” said Tim Volovsek, a man from Bath who claims his signs were destroyed. “It’s a politically charged season, right? people are acting on emotions and they shouldn’t be.”

Volovsek says his signs being destroyed were an act of political intimidation, but what are the rules for campaign signs?

“Clearly if you’re a mowing company, you know you should be moving stuff, not mowing it over,” says Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope.

Swope stresses that the signs must be on your property and not in the public right of way.

“The city does have the right to remove yard signs that are in the right of way because that is public property and yard signs cannot be there by law,” said Swope.

However, Volovsek says his signs were on his property when they were destroyed.

The Clinton County Road Commission and the mowing company responsible for the destruction have already reached out and apologized—and Volovsek has accepted.

However, he says more needs to be done.

“That there be some type of letter of reprimand of some sort to the company or the persons that responsible to do this,” said Volovsek. “They need to know that what they did was very wrong.”
