LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The Eaton Rapids boys soccer team secured its fourth consecutive conference championship by hanging on for a 1-0 win over Lansing Sexton on Thursday night.

The Greyhounds’ goal was scored by Brandon Huntington on a penalty kick midway through the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Guy made several key saves in the second half to earn the shutout in net.

Coming into the game, Eaton Rapids and Lansing Sexton were both 5-1-0 in conference play, tied for first place. This was the final night of conference play, making it a de facto conference championship game between the Greyhounds and J-Dubbs.

“Our schedule was a little bit tougher this year but I knew that we were capable,” said head coach Mike Decker. “It was just a matter of time. It’s a good time to have it happen though [with] postseason play [coming]. So, we’re ready.”

“We’ve been with this coach since we were in, like, U-8s,” said senior captain Drew Holevac. “So it’s awesome and it’s not only just for us seniors but also some of these freshmen, some of these guys who are getting bumped up to varsity this year. It’s an awesome experience for them just to be able to have that with the team. Hopefully that sets the precedent for the next coming years. It shouldn’t just be four in a row. I know some of these guys want more and I want it for them.”

Eaton Rapids improves its overall record to 7-6 on the season with the win while Lansing Sexton falls to 8-2-1.

Lansing Sexton’s eight wins are the most the program has had in a season since 2018. The J-Dubbs will play at Lakewood in the CAAC Cup on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Eaton Rapids will return to the pitch to play St. Johns in the CAAC Bronze Cup on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
