LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– Lansing and Jackson city officials are working to reduce gun violence and new data shows both cities have made progress.

Both cities saw recent highs in gun violence in 2021, but the number of people who have died from gun violence has since been cut in half.

In Jackson, the city has made progress in reducing the number of people getting shot by 68 percent and has also seen the overall number of shooting incidents fall by 53 percent. Jackson police say they won’t stop until they get the number of homicides down to zero—which hasn’t happened since 2001.

In Lansing, the city has seen a 36 percent drop in the number of people dying in shootings, but the overall number of people getting shot has stayed the same.

City officials say that new laws and work from groups like Advance Peace that target repeat offenders are behind the drop in the number of fatal shootings.

However, they admit that there is still work to be done to bring the overall rate down.

The only reason murders dropped and overall shootings are up comes down to aim. Many of the victims are being shot below the waist.

in a list of the top 50 most violent cities, Michigan has 7 listed with Laning being #17. Battle Creek & Jackson were listed too. I was surprised to see Port Huron, but not Detoilet.
