LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Many in Hurricane Milton’s part are still trying to clean up from Hurricane Helene, which devastated the southeastern United States, killing hundreds of people and leaving hundreds more missing.

The federal government is handing out hundreds of millions of dollars to impacted survivors, and Red Cross volunteers from Michigan are also helping out.

66 Michigan volunteers are working to help rebuild communities and help those affected by Hurricane Helene, continuing to sacrifice their time to help those who need it most.

6 News learned of a heartwarming story of these volunteers helping to feed a neighborhood of children. Another volunteer talked about the community of the Red Cross, saying meeting other workers felt like a family reunion but with strangers. Yet another volunteer told 6 News about helping family members reconnect while facing the challenges of losing their cell phones.

She said this type of work “fills her soul.”

Another volunteer, Harold West, talked about providing hot meals and supplies to those in the Tampa area. When asked about the people he has been serving, he described them as “very, very appreciative.”

“They’re very gracious and very thankful, we had to do a grocery store run… you can’t walk down an aisle without somebody thanking you,” said West.

West also said they’ll be ready to go when aid is needed after Hurricane Milton.
