LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — One homeless shelter is expanding to help those in need during the cold winter months.

As the weather in Mid-Michigan slowly begins to change, being outside during the cold winter nights can be dangerous for people who have nowhere to go.

Kimberly Coleman, Director of Human Relations and Services says the shelter will be adding 70 to 100 new beds.

She says there are two phases of the project, which cost a total of $800,000.

The funding came from the state which was given to the city and then gifted to Holy Cross.

She says phase one will house 50 people in an existing spot while they prepare a larger space for the remaining 20 people.

Phase one is projected to be finalized in November.

“I’m more excited about the fact that we’re able to address the needs of those folks who are out in the elements,” said Coleman. “Not just during the winter months, but year round and it’s a long-term solution and not a short-term alternative solution. Which is what we were working toward.”

Coleman says the project should be completed by December 2025.
