BLACKMAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLNS) — A local neighborhood is fed up with people using their shared community space as a dumping ground for trash.
Neighbors who live off Henrietta St. told 6 news that people have been repeatedly driving over to this neighborhood and dumping trash.
“It’s a nice neighborhood around here, it’s quiet,” said longtime resident, James Brown. “We try to keep it quiet and we try and keep it clean.”

Henrietta St. is a common spot for illegal dumping. Sometimes trash, sometimes furniture. Just about anything.

“This last time was in broad daylight,” said Brown.

But this time, someone left a mattress and box spring.

“I was out cutting my lawn and the vehicle went by me,” he said. “I figured it was people moving because they had [the mattress] on the roof of their vehicle.”

He sent us a photo of a white suburban with mattresses strapped to the top and it was later found in this very spot.

A Blackman-Leoni police officer told 6 news, this very street has been a hot spot for illegal dumping for years, at least the last 16 years he had been working there.

“I want to believe in a clean neighborhood.,” said Brown. “I didn’t buy this house to have it all dirtied up because people want to be disrespectful.”

Illegal dumping is a misdemeanor and it carries a fine or even jail time. If you know anything, contact the Blackman-Leoni Public Safety Department. If you see someone illegally dumping, police recommend trying to get their license plate number and giving them a call.
