Dr. Tibbetts retires after 50-plus years in education

SANTA ROSA BEACH, Fla. ( WMBB ) — An educator of more than 50 years and local principal for more than a decade is boxing up her dry-erase markers this month.

Alexis Tibbetts has served as the principal of South Walton High School for 10 years.

This month the long time educator celebrated her retirement surrounded by staff on campus.

Tibbetts also worked at multiple schools in Okaloosa County before being named principal of the Seahawks in 2014.

Tuesday, she emotionally shared what she believes is her biggest accomplishment.

“I have been very lucky to do what I’ve done for 50 years and I’ve loved it,” said a teary-eyed Tibbetts. “But I think it’s really true to say it’s not the legacy of how many years you’ve done it, it’s that your presence has made a difference in the lives of kids. And teachers. I always wanted to remove barriers for my teachers and I always wanted to help kids emotionally, socially and especially academically. I’m very proud that South Walton High School is in the top 2% of high schools in America.”

South Walton’s graduation is set for Thursday at 7 pm. The last day of school for students is May 29, teachers and Tibbetts will be on site for a final teacher workday on May 30.
