BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – Big Brothers of Big Sisters of Northwest Florida fosters one-on-one mentoring throughout Bay, Walton, and Okaloosa counties.

It’s a relationship that aims to provide support and guidance to our area’s youth.

According to the agency, it’s also proven to help children perform better in school.

Of the children served last year, who had a mentor for at least six months, nearly 90% improved in school attendance, 85% of children maintained or improved in reading, and 97% remained crime-free.

Katie and her ‘Big Sister,’ Alicia, have been matched in Bay County for seven years.

“She’s been the sister that I’ve needed,” said Katie. “She has never judged.”

Katie, who starts her senior year of high school this year, said Alicia has motivated her tremendously over the last few years.

“She’s went to a few college tours with me and she’s helped me decide the pros and cons of the college itself,” said Katie.

Not only has Alicia helped Katie with studying and college decisions, but she is also a great listener.

“It’s having someone there for you that you can actually talk to and not feel any stress about it,” said Katie.
