BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – Tuesday is the 75th anniversary of the opening of the original Bay Memorial Hospital, now called Ascension Sacred Heart Bay.

Since 1951, the facility has provided the region with high-quality care, first as Bay Memorial, then Bay Medical Center, and now Ascension.

The Heart Institute is known as one of the best cardiovascular facilities in the Southeast. Mayor Michael Rohan presented the Ascension President and CEO Robin Godwin with a certificate to commemorate the occasion.

“On May 31, I had a blood clot on my head, in my brain actually. I went to Bay Medical that morning, and that afternoon I was in the operating room and they fixed me. It’s great to have a great local hospital here,” Rohan said.

The hospital lost a lot of historical artifacts during Hurricane Michael. Administrators are planning to set up an exhibit as part of an extensive remodeling project.

They’re asking anyone with hospital photos, newspaper clippings, uniforms, or other memorabilia to consider donating it for the exhibit.
