BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – Panama City Port Authority officials approved their annual tariff amendments on Thursday.

The tariff is the cost per short ton of cargo that moves through the port. Port authority officials said their tariff rates are competitive and have grown between 3-5%.

Not only do these rates help attract new clients, but the money is also reinvested into the port to pay for infrastructure projects and offset insurance costs.

Panama City Port Authority Executive Director Alex King said they’re working hard to create new business opportunities in the area.

“We’re always working to attract new cargo opportunities and grow our business. We have to be a growing port to remain competitive, to support healthy stevedoring operations, to support our pilots, and to support our tug companies. The more competitive your rates are, it does help when you’re attracting that new business,” King said.

The new rates go into effect on October 1.
