TYNDALL AIRFORCE, FL. ( WMBB ) – As the space industry continues to grow in Florida, Tyndall Air Force Base will soon play a role in helping further space exploration.

Space Florida recently announced that Tyndall will become a designated Space Port territory.

While there won’t be any rocket launches happening from the Panhandle, the CEO of Space Florida says Tyndall was a great candidate to develop a new Space Port territory.

A Hand Up and Partners now expands to Gulf and Franklin County

“If you look at where Tyndall sits just off the Gulf Coast and the access that it has to the Gulf Range and things like that, and those all are strategic factors that helped identify Tyndall as a potential location for something in the future,” Space Florida CEO Robert Long said.

A new territory means the base will become an aerospace “Hub” that adds to the larger system across the state.

“We want to take advantage of those unmatched toolkits that we have here in space Florida, of course, an unbeatable location that we have here in Florida. And then leverage our unrivaled experience to do that as well. So you put all those things together, you look across the state, we want to approach it cohesively and as a system,” Long said.

While the company is still in the early stages with Tyndall, they said the projects can range from engine testing, to research, to satellite manufacturing. None of it will negatively impact local operations.

“Our number one thing is to do no harm also, right? So we’re not going to go and impact anything that’s already going on. So between those two things, it’s a collaborative approach and we’ll continue to do that, “Long said.

“Sometimes it may be even a question of them you know, how can we support their mission, taking advantage of our tools that we have to offer. So really, it’s about stacking those advantages that we can bring to the table to help either enable DOD and the Air Force in that case to be able to do more in their location or come into some sort of mutually beneficial partnership,” Long added.

Space Florida says while the state legislature has moved along quickly to expand the space industry, the Tyndall Spaceport is still in its early stages.

They say the statewide space support system master plan is still in development, but it will lay out the space port’s role over the next 10 years.
