PANAMA CITY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – Labor Day travelers are advised to exercise caution this holiday weekend.

Local authorities ask that you drive safely and plan ahead as they expect a spike in visitors coming into the area.

Labor Day weekend is the last holiday break before summer wraps up. AAA found that Labor Day travel is up 9% compared to last year.

“Consumer spending remains strong. And one of the top things Americans are spending their money on is travel experiences. And we’ve seen that throughout the summer, and that’s likely to continue into the Labor Day weekend,” AAA Spokesman Mark Jenkins said.

Authorities urge safety this holiday weekend

AAA says travel costs are down by 2% and gas prices are below $3 in some areas. During the holiday, drivers are encouraged to have an alternative ride if they are going to be drinking.

“We have so many other alternatives and travel through ride, share, and the old designated driver. And we have a local record company or two that’s willing to tow your car for free to your home if you’ve had too much to drink,” Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Jason King said.

Lt. King also urges drivers to leave their road rage at home and pack their patience. Stranded motorists should try to get off the roadway as quickly as possible and keep an eye out for roadside workers.

“All drivers, we’re encouraging them to keep an eye out for our roadside workers. They’ll be on the shoulders of the road. They’re risking their lives to help others. So do your part by slowing down and moving over to give them extra space,” Jenkins said.

AAA says the best time for road travel is in the morning or in the evening after dinner.

Law enforcement teams will be out in full force to keep drivers safe.

“We usually team up with the Bay County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Ford has been really good about keeping our DUI task force going. So you may see multiple agencies working together from FWC, the Florida Highway Patrol, Bay County Sheriff’s Office,” Lt. King said.

Officers monitor the roads for speeding, seatbelts, and distracted driving.

Florida Highway Patrol encourages drivers to make sure they have good tires and working windshield wipers before they travel.
