BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – A new sport is making waves in Bay County.

Mosley High School launched the county’s first-ever high school bass fishing team on Thursday.

Students can practice their fishing skills and get the opportunity to participate in a team tournament against schools state-wide. They don’t need previous experience.

The team’s sponsor said they would teach the basics of bass fishing and fit every member on the boat with the proper gear and safety equipment.

The program’s goal is to give the students a passion for bass fishing, while also teaching the importance of teamwork and understanding their environment.

“It teaches these kids to work together with somebody, it’s not so much an individual. You’re overcoming. You’re adapting to your circumstances. You know, and then it’s more so working with not just working with somebody, but the conservation of your-of your fisheries and being a good steward of the resources we have here,” Mosley Bass Master Sponsor Travis Page said.

Page said they’ve been trying to put together the school-sponsored program for years. He’s expecting around 3-dozen boys and girls to join.

The first tournament is on September 21st High Point Landing on Deer Point Lake. The community is invited to come out and support the team.
